I miss John Peel. Who else does ? I miss the Peel sessions, and you can bet your life the current generation of bands must be painfully aware of what they are missing.

I miss that voice of his introducing tunes we had no other chance to ever hear again anywhere else and I miss the wrong side of the tune played at the wrong speed live on air, and the frantic drumand bass followed by stomping country version of iggy pop or some weird creole orchestra..,.

Back in 1984, I used to be glued on long waves radio on Friday evenings, from my bedroom in the south of France, moving the antenna with the highest minutia to get the best possible signal, listening to him filtered through the constants fuzz of radio waves-and yest sometimes, it was hard to distinguish what was the tune or the back noise…

I can remember him, I was living in a rented roomin Exeter in 1994, being incredibly angry and yet solemn in his announcement of Kurt Cobain’s suicide. He was the gretest living Englishman as far as I was concerned, and I really wish I could have shaken his hand and tell him thank you. Without him, I probably would not work where I work today.

I wonder what your memories of his shows are? Feel free to share those with the rest of us byu posting them here :

As for the records we put out this week, well, it’s more of the same brilliant Jazz collection (it absolutely blewmy mind how those records flew out the rack in a matter of 2 days) and some classic rock and late 70’s indie, including a fine amount of rare Smiths, Joy Division and Cure 12 inches in great nic, and some pretty tasty studff such as Suicide’s first lp.

Overall, it’s mostly more grand classics though : Led Zep, Floyd, Dylan, Beatle, Stones, Pistols etc…

Loads of nice seven inches too, mostly priced one to three pounds.

So have a good week and hope to see you around browsing in the shop soon.

Philippe at Rat Records.
